About Škocjan Caves (Škocjanske jame)
The Škocjan Caves are among the most extraordinary natural wonders in Europe — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986, carved over millennia by the Reka river as it vanishes underground into the Slovenian Karst. Inside lies one of the largest known underground river canyons in the world, a gorge so vast that a cathedral could stand within it.
The classic guided tour leads you on foot through the Silent Cave, glittering with stalactites, and into the thundering Murmuring Cave, where a footbridge — the Cerkvenik bridge — crosses the Reka some 45 metres above the water. It is a walk few visitors ever forget.
Tours run in guided groups of limited size and set off at fixed times from the park's reception centre near Divača, an easy hour from Ljubljana, Trieste or the Slovenian coast. Because places are capped, booking ahead is the reliable way to secure the departure you want in the busy summer months.
