If you want an easy, family-friendly visit with a famous cave train and delicate white formations, choose Postojna. Škocjan: scale and the underground river
Škocjan is about size and sound. Its guided tour walks you on foot through one of the largest underground canyons in the world, crossing the Cerkvenik bridge 45 metres above the thundering Reka. It's wilder, quieter and more physically demanding — and UNESCO World Heritage listed for its global importance.
There's no train and no gift-shop bustle underground; it's just you, the guide, the group and the immense dark gorge.
Postojna: the cave train and the formations
Postojna is the more famous and the more visited. An electric train carries you deep into the system, and the walk that follows passes some of the most delicate and beautiful cave formations in Europe, including the towering white 'Brilliant' stalagmite. It's easier, warmer in feel and very family-friendly.
It also pairs with Predjama Castle, dramatically built into a cliff cave mouth nearby.
Access, families and mobility
Postojna is the easier visit — the train does much of the work, and it suits small children and limited mobility better. Škocjan involves several hundred steps on a two-hour walk and is not suitable for wheelchairs, though the park offers a shorter accessible route to the dolines.
For families with toddlers or anyone with mobility concerns, Postojna is usually the better single choice; sure-footed families and keen walkers will love Škocjan.
Doing both in a day
The two caves are about 40 minutes apart, so many visitors see both in a single day — typically one in the morning and one in the afternoon, with Predjama Castle added if time allows. It makes for a long but hugely rewarding day in the Karst.
If you do both, consider Škocjan in the morning when you're freshest for the walk, and Postojna's easier train tour after.
